How Student Teaching Has Helped My Writing Skills
When I first began teaching, I didn't anticipate how much the experience would impact my own writing. As I navigated through lesson plans, engaged with students, and explained concepts aloud, I noticed subtle yet profound shifts in how I approached my writing. Teaching has provided me with a broader perspective and has undoubtedly refined my writing style.
One of the most significant changes I've observed is in my attention to detail. In the past, I might have been content with getting ideas down on paper, not paying as much attention to the finer points of grammar or the clarity of my explanations. However, the responsibility of teaching has made me more deliberate with my words. I’ve come to realize that the way I explain concepts to my students often mirrors how I should present ideas in my writing—clearly, concisely, and with a focus on detail.
Explaining things out loud in the classroom has become an invaluable practice. It forces me to think about how my words will be received and understood by others, which in turn influences how I write. The process of breaking down complex ideas for my students has taught me the importance of being direct and clear, both in speech and in text. This has naturally translated into a writing style that is more deliberate and purposeful.
Another aspect of teaching that has impacted my writing is the awareness of grammar and structure. Previously, these elements might not have been at the forefront of my mind. But now, knowing that I’m setting an example for my students, I pay closer attention to how I construct sentences and the rules I follow (or occasionally break). This heightened awareness ensures that my writing is not only more polished but also more effective in communicating my ideas.
In conclusion, student teaching has not only broadened my perspective but also sharpened my writing skills. By being more careful with my words and paying attention to details, I've developed a writing style that is both direct and deliberate. It's an ongoing process, but one that I’m grateful for as it continues to improve my craft.
