The MoonBooks English SmartStart Program: A Summer of Teaching, Learning, and Growth
This summer, I had the unique opportunity to teach an online English class for elementary school students in South Korea, called The MoonBooks English SmartStart Program. As someone who had limited teaching experience, stepping into the role of an educator for ESL students was both exciting and challenging. But it quickly became one of the highlights of my summer in 2024.
The class was made possible thanks to my cousin, who lives in South Korea and connected me with several parents interested in enrolling their children in an English program. Despite being halfway across the world, technology allowed us to bridge the gap, and soon, I was teaching eager young students the fundamentals of English.
What made this experience truly special was the connection I formed with my students. Each week, I made it a priority to involve every student in activities, ensuring that everyone felt included and had the chance to participate. We covered everything from basic vocabulary and grammar to more advanced conversational skills, all while incorporating fun games and interactive exercises to keep the learning process engaging.
Teaching these students wasn’t just about imparting knowledge; it was a learning experience for me as well. I discovered the importance of clear communication, the art of lesson planning, and how to present myself confidently in front of a virtual classroom. These skills, often overlooked, are crucial for effective teaching, and I’m grateful for the growth I experienced in these areas.
The feedback from my students was overwhelmingly positive. At the end of the program, many of them wrote heartfelt cards and letters expressing their sadness that the class was ending. Their words touched me deeply and reinforced how much this experience meant to them. Knowing that I made a difference in their learning journey was incredibly rewarding.
Reflecting on this experience, I can confidently say that teaching has helped me become more open and adaptable. It has given me a new perspective on the importance of patience, preparation, and connection in education. While I initially saw teaching as a way to give back, I now realize that it has also enriched my own personal and professional development.
The MoonBooks English SmartStart Program was more than just a class—it was an opportunity to build relationships, learn, and grow alongside my students. As I continue on my journey, I carry with me the lessons and memories from this summer, and I look forward to more opportunities to teach and connect with others in the future.
