My 2-Year Publishing Journey

Since November 2022, I’ve embarked on a foreign journey: writing and publishing three books in just two years. My interest in writing a science fiction novel sparked after reading Town Is by the Sea by Joanne Schwartz. Her writing inspired me to create my own stories.

I've always been fascinated by space exploration. As a child, I loved watching videos, movies, and reading books about spaceships, stars, and the movement of celestial bodies. In middle school, I delved deeper into topics like Dyson swarms, black holes, and the Fermi Paradox. After reading Schwartz's book, I decided to channel my fascination into writing my own science fiction novel.

What began as a tentative effort turned into a 300-page novel over the course of a year. While I drew inspiration from science fiction novels and childhood favorites like Percy Jackson and Studio Ghibli films, I discovered my own voice. I learned I didn’t need to rely on complex or long-winded sentences; I could convey my message clearly and simply for all audiences.

As I continued writing, my father approached me for help with his own book—a manual for inclusive Taekwondo, aimed at the students he had supported for the past 20 years. I realized my passions were aligning with my father's mission. This was another way I could contribute to the community, not just through volunteer work but also by writing and publishing resources that could reach many more people than I had previously imagined.

Overall, my publishing journey has been long but rewarding. I’ve learned how to write more descriptively and find my voice, but I’ve also gained insight into the business side of writing. I discovered that social media plays a huge role in promoting your book and that the publishing process is intricate and sometimes challenging, especially when it comes to designing a book cover or uploading that book cover online.

I’m excited about my latest project: an ESL workbook for my international elementary school students. Through all these experiences, I’ve come to appreciate that publishing is a unique process.
